Flower Arranging a la Pot-Et-Fleur
First of all, what is this French sounding expression, pot-et-fleur? Well, pot-et-fleur is an arrangement of growing plants combined with cut flowers. It is quite suitable for centrally heated rooms. The plants can last for a long time, and the fresh cut flowers can be replaced at any time when necessary.
The container you choose for this must be waterproof as it will have soil in it and will need watering. Also it should be sufficiently deep in order to allow the roots to sit below the rim, so watering will be easy.
So what all do you need to create your own pot-et-fleur flower arrangement?
- A waterproof container
- Soil, compost that has pebbles in the bottom for drainage
- Fresh cut flowers
- Growing plants
- Oasis cylinder
- Smaller containers (if wanted) for the fresh cut flowers
Preparation entails the following:
- Place some soil in the main container. You also need to make sure you provide drainage for the plants. So you can also put a layer of washed gravel at the bottom of the container along with the soil.
- Remove the plants from their original pots
- Have handy the cut fresh flowers
- Place the plants and the fresh flowers in the container in the soil or compost. Make sure that the arrangement is taking the tallest plants at the back. The smaller flowers should go towards the outer edges of arrangements ant the more open ‘fuller’ flowers go in deep and at the center of the arrangement. This will give a nice visual balance to the flower arangement along with a well formed look.
- Add more soil and press firmly the plants in their place
- Simply continue to cover the soil until it is at about 1 in or so from the rim
- As a final touch you can even sprinkle some silver floristry sand or granules over the top layer of the soil, which is visible. This will give it a nice, modern look
Try this recipe with different containers, or different colors of fresh cut flowers, modifying one or more variables at a time. You will find that each of your pot-et-flower flower arrangements will look very different from the previous ones!
